Predicted GCSE grades for summer 2020 - how will this work?

How will my grade be worked out?

Exam boards will be asking teachers, who know their students well, to submit their judgement about the grade that they believe the student would have received if exams had gone ahead.

To produce this, teachers will be asked to take into account a range of evidence and data including performance on mock exams and non-exam assessment. Clear guidance on how to do this fairly and robustly will be provided to schools and colleges soon.

Exam boards will combine the information from teachers with other relevant data, including prior attainment, and use this information to produce a calculated grade for each student.  

In the meantime, the best thing to do is to log on to your online English and maths classes so that you continue to build your skills and knowledge.

My teacher has already predicted my grade - will that be my final grade? 

Not necessarily.  Before Coronavirus, teachers predicted grades for students which can change as the academic year progresses. This gives students important feedback on their progress.  However, we are now in a completely new situation and are being asked to predict final grades using specific guidance which we have not been given yet.  So, no students have been given a final predicted grade yet.   Please log onto your online English and maths classes to continue to improve your skills. 

What happens if I didn't take a mock exam?

Mock exam results form a key part of your predicted grade but if you didn’t take a mock, you will still receive a final grade based on other available data.We do not have the details of a cut-off date for collecting evidence for predicting grades yet so the best thing you can do is to continue with your online lessons and submit work to your teacher as requested. 

Will my final grade be treated as a real grade now and in the future? 

Yes.

Can I appeal if I think my final grade is unfair?

Yes, you will be able to appeal if you believe the right process has not been followed.

When will I receive my final grade?

Final grades are likely to still be given out in August but no date has been set yet. 

Can I resit an exam if my final grade isn’t high enough?

Yes, there will also be an option to sit exams early in the next academic year for any students who wish to – and students can also choose to sit exams next summer.
