Students from City of Westminster College's Complex Needs Hub at Maida Vale campus took an exciting trip with their families to Westminster City Hall to spend the morning with the Lord Mayor in his parlour.
In an engaging session tailored to the students’ needs, the Lord Mayor discussed his role, responsibilities, and the significance of the mayoralty within London.
One of the most memorable aspects of the visit was the sensory experience designed specifically for the learners. The students were given the chance to touch the Mayor’s robes, feel the intricate details of his ceremonial attire, and even wear his prestigious chains. This immersive, hands-on approach helped to bring the Lord Mayor’s role to life in an accessible and engaging way.
The visit was a fantastic opportunity for students and their families to gain a deeper understanding of local government in an inclusive setting. It highlights importance of accessibility and representation in civic spaces, and the positive benefits that come from making these environments welcoming to all.
The college is grateful to Lord Mayor Councillor Robert Rigby and the team at Westminster City Hall – including Councillor Lorraine Dean - for their hospitality and for providing such a meaningful experience for our students. This visit will undoubtedly be remembered as a special and inspiring day for everyone involved.
