City of Westminster College’s male basketball team have won the London Basketball Association’s College League, remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. Following a few months of training, the team started the competition in December with a 55-24 win over Stanmore College and ended with a 66 – 20 win against City and Islington College in March. The team is made up of students aged 16-19 years, with the College’s Student Enrichment Team Leader Lindon Wallace acting as Head Coach. Practice takes place two days a week, with open practice on Wednesday for any student from the College and team practices on Thursdays.
“We started late last year and have played most of our games at London South Bank University, although we have had two games at our Paddington Green Campus,” said College Sports Maker, Tom Rough. “The best win we had in terms of score was against St Augustine when we won 93-56, although we were very proud of our win against St Charles as they’re a team we’ve lost to before and they’re pretty good. We’ve never won the league before and to go undefeated throughout is a massive achievement for the team and the College as a whole.”
The team also recently competed in an end of season tournament at Lewisham ‘Thunder Dome’ where they won all of their games but one, placing third overall. A few members of the team picked up awards including Jamal Simpson for Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, Adomas Zemgulys who won the Spirit of the League award and Lindon Wallace received the award for Coach of the Year.
