A-level Drama students create, co-direct and perform play Unknown

City of Westminster College’s A2 Drama students have created and co-directed a play which will be open to the public for a one-off performance tonight at 6.30pm in the Sarah Siddons Theatre. The play, called Unknown, is about six very different characters who all find themselves in an unknown place, unsure as to how they ended up there.

Lola Ewumi, a student who helped to create the piece and is performing in it said, “The characters wake up in a place they don’t recognise and each of them tries to tell the audience about how they may have ended up there. So we’re asking how we got there, trying to figure out who we all are and there are some flashback scenes where we try to piece everything together. The story is all about relationships and there are a number of different relationships included such as abusive, incestuous and gay relationships too. We’ve tried to make it slightly spooky, which is a way of making it fun for the audience to watch and to give them something to think about after the show has finished. We’ve been working on it for a while, since October last year so it’s been a long process but we’re looking forward to performing it.”

“It’s a very topical production – the play came about when the students were looking at writing something about depression and suicide amongst young people,” explained Drama & Performing Arts Lecturer Mark Spillane. “From there it has developed into a very interesting piece, raising questions about different types of conflicts and pressures, particularly amongst families and current culture.”
