"Why choosing an Apprenticeship was right for me"

Geneva Peters recently completed her Level 3 Apprenticeship at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council and gained permanent employment following her completion of the provision. She won a Student Award in June 2016 in the Work Based Learning category with her tutor Liz saying, "Geneva was a pleasure to work with, always punctual and completing every objective for her Apprenticeship with a smile." Here Geneva tells us why she chose City of Westminster College and why doing an Apprenticeship was the best decision she made.

“In 2014 when I was in my last year of sixth form I made the decision that I wanted to do an Apprenticeship rather than go to university; partly because I didn’t know what to study and also because it’s so expensive, I didn’t want to go for the sake of it.

For me, the idea of an Apprenticeship was perfect as it allowed me to work, learn and earn at the same time. It was also a great way to be introduced into a different profession and discover new areas of work which I might not have considered previously. I completed a Business Administration Level 2 Apprenticeship, however I worked at two different placements in various teams, so I was introduced to areas of project management and database administration; two things I would never have considered before, but found that I enjoyed and would possibly pursue in the future.

The opportunity to do my Apprenticeship was presented through EPIC CIC, so I was automatically enrolled at City of Westminster College. I’m now so glad that I was enrolled at CWC as my tutor Liz and all the staff have been very supportive and provided me with the right level of support and guidance in the form of classes, portfolio sessions and visits to the work place. I’m very grateful that these support measures were available throughout the journey – I never felt stuck or lost.

The whole experience has been amazing and I’ve loved every moment of it. I’ve developed a lot as a person, gained lots of new transferable skills and I’ve met some amazing people. I can firmly say that I will never regret my choice of not going to university and choosing an Apprenticeship instead.

Apprenticeships are definitely something that I would recommend to others, especially for anyone looking for an alternative to university. They offer a great chance to learn something new and get a start in a profession that you’re interested in as they’re available in a wide range of sectors. They also enable you to develop yourself as a person, learning skills you can use all throughout your life and they don’t require you to have any previous experience – the whole point of the journey is learning while you work!”
