Forensic science student excels at the WorldSkills UK Finals in Birmingham

A CWC student who reached the final of the World Skills Forensic Science competition, beat over 65 degree level learners to achieve 4th place, and also secured a job opportunity with a forensic science provider. Qamil Murturi received the highest score any CWC learner has achieved at the heat stages in the past three years and was the only Level 3 BTEC candidate through to The Skills Show, with all other finalists studying at university.

The College hosted the London heat of the 2016 WorldSkills UK Forensic Science competition in June, with several students from CWC taking part alongside learners from other London Colleges. Following several regional heats taking place across the UK, BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science student Qamil was selected to go through to the finals along with seven other competitors.

“Qamil had to complete a scene investigation of a car including recording the scene and bagging and tagging evidence,” said Harry Smy, Curriculum Coordinator for Science. “Then on the second day he had to identify what two items of evidence he thought were the most relevant and try to recover samples and create a DNA profile using some industry tests which gave him a great opportunity to use industry standard equipment.”

The Skills Shows is the UK’s largest skill and careers showcase, aiming to inspire young people to explore further education. It offers a wide selection of careers and sectors, highlighting the many routes available to achieve these, including further education, training and apprenticeships. CWC students showcased their forensic science skills, demonstrating how to investigate a crime scene, taking fingerprints and examining evidence through a microscope.

“We’re the only College in the country to get BTEC Level students to the final,” added Harry. “Students definitely benefit from it because not only do they get to show off their skills, but they also connect with other students across the country and meet industry professionals and learn what it’s like to work in the forensic science industry.”

This is the third year running that the College has entered the WorldSkills UK Forensic Science Competition, with students making it through to the final every year.
