With the January deadline for UCAS applications fast approaching, a number of CWC students are already receiving offers or interview invitations from their chosen universities. While some courses/universities won’t request you to attend an interview before issuing you with an offer, a number will want to speak to you before making a decision. Below are some ways to make sure you’re interview ready!
Before your interview it’s also beneficial to have a mock interview either with a tutor, friend or member of your family and speak to students who have already been through the process and can give you an idea of what it will be like.
It’s a good idea to try and find out what type of interview you will be having so you’ll know what to expect; some are ‘exam out loud’ while others are much more informal and they can range from 15 minutes to over an hour. Whatever format your interview takes, make sure you’re informed and know enough about the course and what it entails in order to contribute to the conversation. Body language is also important when making a good first impression – sit up straight, make eye contact, smile occasionally and engage with the interviewer right from the start.
Make sure you know your personal statement, as it’s likely you’ll be asked about specific claims made in your UCAS application. This could be anything from what you like to do outside of school, what your favourite area of study is on your current courses and why you’ve applied for that particular subject and university. Take your time to answer any questions asked and give honest and full answers; if you don’t understand what they’re asking you then don’t be afraid to ask them to rephrase the question.
Asking your interviewer questions about the course and the university will further emphasise your interest in the subject you’re applying to study.
Remember, there is no such thing as a perfect interview, just make sure you’re relaxed, enthusiastic and honest. The interview is as much an opportunity for you to find out more about the course and university and make sure it is right for you, as it is a chance for the interviewer to get to know you.
