City of Westminster College has won 'School of the Year' at the University of Westminster's Distinctiveness Awards. The awards recognise achievement in a number of volunteering and mentoring schemes run by the University. The College took part in the Associates in Schools Scheme where undergraduates volunteer to support teachers in the classroom. 

In an interview with the University our Head of teaching and Training, Pete Sharrocks, told them "City of Westminster College is delighted to have participated in the University’s Associates in School scheme. This is our second year and, just like last year, our expectations have been surpassed. The calibre and commitment of the volunteers has been excellent and our learners, and teachers, have benefitted enormously. Volunteers have been able to use the subject knowledge they have gained at the University to support students in small groups and on a one-to-one basis, and contribute to whole class discussions and teaching. A number of our students face quite significant barriers to their learning and the volunteers have been able to gain their trust and as role models been inspirational to many of them". 

 

Not only did the College win an award, but one of our volunteers John-Patrick Casey won 'Associate of the Year'. Pictured here with his mentor Kim Nguyen from our Creative industries School, John-Patrick is going on to do his teacher training here at the College next year.
