CWC students take centre stage with playwright prizes

City of Westminster College are thrilled to announce that three of their students have been awarded the top prizes at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The Papatango Theatre Company invited students to submit stories as part of its Writing a Monologue programme for the 2022 Young Playwrights competition, with three CWC students being selected by the panel of judges for the high quality of their compositions.

Hannaa Jean Delvarr scooped top prize for her Finding Cindy script, while Does He Know? by Lois Ghir and Harry Vuarrier-Lewis was amongst the runners-up, picked from an incredible 1,553 scripts, which is a record for the competition.

As part of her prize for winning, Hannaa will see her story brought to life in recordings by professional actors, which will be shared online and on social media. In addition, Hannaa has the opportunity to join an online, intensive Young Playwrights summer school this month, delivered by award-winning playwright and Papatango Workshop Facilitator Karis Kelly and creative writing organisation Fighting Words, as well as getting a £50 credit for Nick Hern Books.

For being awarded a runner-up prize, Lois and Harry will feature on the Papatango website to recognise their achievement. All winners will get the opportunity to hear professional feedback on their scripts from the judging panel.

Samuel Bailey, Playwright and winner of the 2019 Papatango New Writing Prize, said:

“Finding Cindy is a fresh and funny take on an old fairy-tale. The writer displays skill in updating a well-known story and making it surprising and relevant. The dialogue is packed with funny little lines and jokes.”

Stephen Davis, Group Principal and CEO of the United Colleges Group, said:

“Everyone at City of Westminster College is extremely proud of Hannaa for winning, and Lois and Harry for being awarded runner-up prizes by Papatango Theatre Company, especially from such a large number of competing scripts. Our congratulations go out to all the participants who took part in this excellent competition.”
