Law students learn what it takes to become a top UK judge

A Level Law students enjoyed a visit from one of the Supreme Court Justices recently as part of the Speakers for Schools programme. Philip James Sales, Lord Sales, who is a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, took office in January 2019 and is one of 12 judges in the highest court of the UK.

He spent more than an hour with students and talked about his career as a lawyer and listed all of the stages he has gone through to reach the highest judicial office in the UK.

Lord Sales was incredibly open and engaging and was keen to encourage the students to follow a career in law.

The budding solicitors particularly welcomed the Q&A session, where he was keen to answer as many questions as possible. These were wide ranging and well prepared and included such topics as addressing the lack of diversity at the top of the judicial system.

The students found the visit fascinating and it gave them real insight into what a judge does and the types of career available as well as the work and passion required to succeed.

Before leaving, Lord Sales generously presented two books to the department about life as a law student.
