In November, T Level Art & Design and Surveying & Planning learners from City of Westminster College had the chance to be part of the Paddington Public Realm Strategy by taking a deep dive into urban planning with University of Westminster and Westminster Council. The workshop explored shared spaces around the college, and what it takes to build inclusive, safe, and convivial environments using creative and thoughtful design.
In the first activity, students explored St Mary’s Gardens and nearby streets in Paddington Green to assess inclusivity and safety. Many factors were considered, such as how spaces are used by different people at various times of day, which areas felt safer than others, and what features made spaces appealing or unwelcoming.
Next, students returned to the college to design their dream park. They used their observations from the walkabout to create a model park that addressed the needs and feelings of young people at the college.
To conclude the workshop, each group presented their dream park designs, explaining how their ideas promoted a welcoming and safe environment for people of all ages.
The workshop taught students the value of inclusive urban design and helped nurture their observational skills and creative thinking. What’s more, this hands-on experience in the local community helped learners feel inspired to pursue their own career ambitions.
